In this lesson, you will learn to choose to show/hide or enable/disable specific sections or fields of a smartFORM depending on how it is being completed.
Where to Start
Create a smartFORM as you normally would in your system (or you can choose to edit an existing smartFORM). Dependencies can be added to any section. Once the form is completed follow the steps below.
1. Click the Tools button on any section.
2. Click Add Dependency.
3. The section you are adding a dependency will be dependent upon an identified field. Choose the field that this section is dependent upon.
A prompt will appear. Complete the statement as you would like.
4. Use When statements to show, hide, enable, or disable particular sections.
- Shown - the dependent section will only display and print on the form when the identified field/factor is selected/completed
- Hidden - the dependent section will be hidden and will not print on the form when the identified field/factor is selected/completed
- Enabled - the dependent section will be greyed out on the form (so it is still visible on the form) and will only become actionable on the form when the identified field/factor is selected/completed (all enabled fields will still print on the form)
- Disabled - the dependent section will be displayed on the form and will only become disabled (greyed out and not actionable) on the form when the identified field/factor is selected/completed (all disabled fields will still print on the form)
5. When your identified field is selected/completed or not selected/completed on a form that is being created, the section that has the dependency will perform a function (i.e. show/hide the section or enable/disable it). For example, I have my form created so that when a checkbox field is selected, a new section will be shown. Right now, no checkboxes are selected. Therefore, no additional sections appear
When the “Literacy” checkbox is selected, the “Literacy” section appears.
When “Math” is selected, the “Math” section appears.
If multiple checkbox fields are selected, the corresponding sections will appear.
1. Click the field you want the dependency added.
2. Click Add Dependency in the right side menu.
When your identified field is selected/completed or not selected/completed on a form that is being created, the field that has the dependency will perform a function (i.e. show/enable the field or hide/disable it). For example, I have my form created so that when the “Yes” checkbox is selected, a new field will be shown. If no checkboxes are selected, no additional fields appear; if the Yes checkbox is selected, then a large text field will appear
- Once dependencies are created on your smartFORM, you can manage them at anytime by clicking the arrow in the “Form Dependencies” portion of the form at the bottom of the page.
- When the “Form Dependencies” portion of the form is opened, you can see all dependencies that have been created, and you can choose to edit them by clicking the edit icon.
