Metrics determine the parameters of a Threshold. One or more metrics can be added to a Threshold to customize those parameters, which can be based on academics, incidents, or attendance. This lesson guides users through adding metrics to a Threshold.
Before You Begin
This article assumes that a Threshold has already been created for metrics to be added to. To learn more about creating a new Threshold, take a look at Create a New Threshold.
Where to Start
- Go to Thresholds.
- Select the desired Threshold from the list.
- Select Edit at the top right of the Threshold, then select Edit from the dropdown.
- Under the desired Indicator, select Add a Metric.
- The Add a Metric pop-up menu appears. Threshold metrics can be Academic, Incident, or Attendance-based.
Add an Academic Metric
Academic Metrics can be added to a Threshold to monitor students who are at a certain score or percentile for one or more testing windows.
- From the Add a Metric menu, select the Academic Metric Type.
- Enter a Metric Name to use as an identifier.
- Select Create.
- Select the Assessment to base the metric on.
- (Optional) Select a Score Detail of the selected Assessment to monitor.
- If the metric should monitor the Primary Score, leave Score Detail blank.
- (Optional) Select one or more Subtests Names.
- Leave Subtests blank to monitor all Subtests within an assessment.
- Enter the metric Rules.
- This statement determines the metric parameters that will trigger the Threshold. The first field identifies the action, such as increase or decrease by, equal, is greater or less than, etc. The second field indicates if the monitored value should be a percentage or value, and the third field indicates the specific percentage or value.
- For example, the rule set selected above will monitor for student Lexile scores on the aReading subtest that decrease by 10 percent.
- Select the Starting Window.
- Select the Ending Window.
- Select Apply to finalize the window.
- At least one window must be added for the metric to monitor within the Threshold.
- Select the trashcan icon next to a window to delete that window.
- Select Save.
Add an Incident Metric
Incident Metrics can be added to a Threshold to monitor students based on a specific incident type, code, or response.
- From the Add a Metric menu, select the Incident Metric Type.
- Enter a Metric Name to use as an identifier.
- Select Create.
- Select whether the metric should be Based On Incident Type or Response.
- Select the Starting Day for the metric to begin monitoring.
- Select the Ending Day for the metric to end monitoring.
- Select the metric Rules.
- This statement determines the metric parameters that will trigger the Threshold. The first field determines the period of days the incidents or responses must be reported within; this can be set to Any, or a specific number of days. The second field determines if the same incident or response must be repeated, or if any incident or response will be counted within the day period. The third and fourth fields indicate the amount of incidents or responses, such as greater than, less than, or equal to the entered number of occurrences.
- For example, the rule set selected above will monitor for students that have the same incident reported more than once within a three day period.
- If the metric is based on Incident Type, choose whether selections should be made from Within Incident Types or Incident Codes.
- This dropdown option doesn't appear if the metric is based on Response.
- Make the Incident or Response Selections that the metric will monitor.
- Select Save.
Add an Attendance Metric
Attendance Metrics can be added to a Threshold to monitor student attendance based on day, period, or student profile attendance.
- From the Add a Metric menu, select the Attendance Metric Type.
- Enter a Metric Name to use as an identifier.
- Select Create.
Based on Days
The Attendance Based On Day option is recommended when looking at attendance over time, or within a specified range of dates, and can be set to include either the SIS Reported Rate, or Full Days.
- Set the metric to be Based On Days.
- Select whether the metric should Include SIS Reported Rate or Full Days.
- SIS Reported Rate: This rate is based on the number of Absent Days, as calculated by the Student Information System (SIS). Note, this is only applicable for those SIS platforms that support this data transfer. This type of metric may be helpful for concerns regarding chronic absenteeism, or to determine college and career readiness. It is recommended to use this option with Clear Previous Result on Each Scheduled Run within threshold configuration.
- Full Days: This is the rate at which a student is present the entire day, and attends school without any absence or tardy events. This type of metric can help in discerning what percent of the time the student is not getting all their instruction, and how a student’s attendance events might be affecting their learning.
- To learn more about these attendance rate options, take a look at Understanding the Attendance Charts.
- Select the Starting Day for the metric to begin monitoring.
- Select the Ending Day for the metric to end monitoring.
- Select the metric Rules.
- This statement determines the metric parameters that will trigger the Threshold. The first field determines the period of days the attendance events must be reported within; this can be set to Any, or a specific number of days. The second field specifies if the metric is monitoring Attendance Rate or Monitored Count. The third and fourth fields indicate the amount of attendance events reported, such as greater than, less than, or equal to the entered number of occurrences.
- For example, the rule set selected above will monitor for students that have a monitored count of greater than three unexcused absences and/or tardies, for any reason, within a 30 day period.
- Make the Reason List Selections that the metric will monitor.
- If left blank, all reasons will be monitored.
- Make the Excused List Selections that the metric will monitor.
- If left blank, all options will be monitored.
- Make the Status List Selections that the metric will monitor.
- If left blank, all statuses will be monitored.
- Select Save.
Based on Periods
The Attendance Based On Period option reports the rate of periods missed, unless an "Excused" code is marked to not count against the full day rate. For example, a threshold based on period could monitor how many times a student was marked tardy in any class throughout the first semester. Take a look at Configure Attendance Periods to learn more about enabling and configuring this option.
- Set the metric to be Based On Period.
- Select the Starting Day for the metric to begin monitoring.
- Select the Ending Day for the metric to end monitoring.

Based on Student Profile Attendance
The Attendance Based on Student Profile option monitors the Full Day rate or SIS Reported Rate that displays in other areas of the eduCLIMBER application, including the Student Profile. This option is recommended to track if students fall above or below a certain SIS Reported Rate or Full Day attendance rate within the school year.
- Set the metric to be Based On Student Profile Attendance.
- Select whether the metric should Include SIS Reported Rate or Full Days.

- For example, the rule set selected above will monitor for students that have a Student Profile SIS Reported Attendance rate greater than 3.000.
- Select Save.
View Metrics
Once created, metrics appear under the relevant Indicator. Metrics appear with the given metric name, with the metric type listed in parentheses.
Created metrics will display slightly differently, depending on the Include Weighting option that was selected during Threshold creation.
